What is the difference between the Smart Bell and the Smart Bell 2.0?
Our original Smart Bell has been innovated to operate battery-free, leading to more consistency in its operation! Plus, the Smart Bell 2.0 has way more customizable options - you can add as many activators and receivers as you like. All you have to do is sync all devices with the current system. Pretty cool, right?
How does the Smart Bell work if there's no battery?
It's magic! Sort of... Our activators are all equipped with micro generators that produce just enough power to send a signal to the receiver when the button is pushed. This eliminates the need for changing batteries and it's way more efficient!
How far apart will the activators and receivers communicate?
Our activators have an impressive range of 1000 feet and should communicate perfectly with receivers as long as there isn't too much interference. That gives you plenty of flexibility for placement!
How many tones and volume levels are there?
Our Smart Bells come with 38 different tones and 4 different volume levels.
What is the voltage of the Smart Bell?
The Smart Bell operates at 110V.
What is the IP rating of the Smart Bell?
The Smart Bell has an IP44 rating, making it weatherproof and waterproof for outdoor use.
Can I put an activator outside/in the cold?
Absolutely! Unless you live in an igloo, our Smart Bell should work great outside during winter months. It has an operating temperature of -20℃ to ~60℃ and is both weatherproof and waterproof. Some pet parents actually prefer installing the Smart Bell outside so their dog has a way to ask to come back indoors!
How old does a puppy have to be to start using the Smart Bell?
We know your puppy is a genius, but one of the most common mistakes we see is expecting too much from a puppy too quickly. We recommend starting with the Smart Bell after your puppy already has a basic understanding that they should go potty outside. Generally that might be around 4 or 5 months old, but every puppy is different. Once your pup is no longer having "accidents," it's fair to start teaching them to "ask" to go outside using the bell. Remember, they're still a puppy, so be patient!
Can the activator be put on the floor for my dog to step on?
Yes! Some dog owners prefer to install the activator on the floor, and that works perfectly. Most dogs seem to have an easier time activating the button by bumping it with their nose, but some prefer to tap it with a paw or step on it. Either way works great!
My Smart Bell comes with screws, but I am not sure how to install it?
Please follow these steps:
- Slide a knife or small screwdriver up the side of the Smart Bell activator.
- Gently pop the face plate from the back piece.
- There are no pre-drilled holes in the plastic - you must use a small drill bit and create these holes. We recommend a 3/32" drill bit.
- Identify the 2 hole marks.
- Drill the holes.
- Locate the position you'd like the activator (by the door used to go "potty").
- Use the screws or drywall anchor/screw combo and attach the activator to the wall.

Where can I get more adhesive stickers for my activator?
You can use any type of command strip to mount your Smart Bell, but if you'd like additional round 3M stickers like the ones that come with the unit, just let us know at team@mightypaw.com and we'll hook you up!
I want to move my activator but it's really hard to get off the wall. What's the trick?
We designed our bell to stay securely on the wall even with constant "abuse" from your pup, which can make it challenging to remove. But don't worry, we've got some tricks! We recommend using a hair dryer to heat and loosen the adhesive, then use a putty knife (or something similar) to gently pry it away from the wall.
I am worried that the adhesive will damage my wall. Is there a solution to this?
For delicate walls and surfaces, we recommend using 3M command strips. These are designed to be strong and easily pull away from the unit if you need to remove it - no wall damage!
Can I use the Smart Bell in an apartment?
Yes, you can definitely use a Smart Bell in an apartment if your pup is already potty trained! Sometimes it takes a bit longer for dogs to make the connection because you have to walk further to get to the potty area. We recommend taking the same route every time and heading to the same potty spot consistently. Dogs will quickly make the connection between ringing the bell and opening the door, and soon they'll connect it with asking to go potty.
How many transmitters can be in sync with the receiver of the Smart Bell?
Some customers have synced up to 8 units, but in theory there isn't an upper limit. However, the more units you sync, the more likely you'll run into syncing issues. We've found 4 is a good upper limit for reliable operation.
Can the Smart Bell activator be set to a specific ringtone?
Unfortunately, no. Only the receiver can be set to a specific ringtone - but with 38 different tones to choose from, you'll find one that works perfectly for your household!
Do you have any training tips for the Smart Bell?
Absolutely! Here are our top tips:
- Sometimes it takes a little time for the training behavior to connect. Consistency and praise are key to helping dogs learn new behaviors. The usual hiccup is that dogs don't understand how to engage with the bell (it's different for them to actively hit it versus you hitting it for them).
- Try putting a dab of peanut butter on the bell for your dog to lick. This encourages interaction with the bell. Once they go after the treat and the bell sounds, make sure to praise them!
- This connects the bell's sound as a positive thing (repeat this over 3-5 days). Often this is all it takes for dogs to connect with the bell and be more "open" to start the bell training for potty time.
My dog just rings the bell for attention, what should I do?
When your dog is first learning to use the Smart Bell, they'll probably figure out they can push it just to get a treat. It's totally okay to reward them for that at first, but after a few days you can just ignore them if you know they don't actually need to go potty. Use your best judgment. Eventually they'll learn to use the bell only when they need to go outside.
My dog seems to be afraid of the bell, what can I do?
The volume on the Smart Bell can seem pretty loud at first and startle some dogs. We recommend putting the volume on a much lower setting. Or, you can even unplug the "receiver" piece so there's no sound at all. Simply reward your dog for sniffing or bumping the bell. After a few positive training sessions, slowly introduce the sound again on the lowest volume or by placing it further away.
My Smart Bell does not make any sound. How can I fix it? / My Smart Bell is not synced correctly. How can I re-sync it?
Thanks for reaching out! It sounds like your activator frequency might not be in sync with your receiver. The first step is to re-sync the activator and receiver:
- With the receiver plugged in, hold the "Volume Adjustment" button for 3 seconds. The LED light will flash blue.
- Go to the activator and push it to re-sync.
- Test to make sure sync is complete and the sound is activated.
If this doesn't work, just contact us at team@mightypaw.com and we'll make it right!
